And below are some observational Photoshop drawings I did whilst on my lunch break at work. Each took about 30 minutes long.

November Spit Painting

Below are some "spit paints" that I have been doing over the past month. "Spit Painting" is a term given to an illustration that is executed very quickly. For these, each one took 30 minutes to complete. To find out more about it, visit the spit painting group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1402563099961950/

Hybrid Halloween, and exhibition at Studio 41

I was recently involved in a group exhibition organised by ArtFarm titled Hybrid Halloween, and hosted at Studio41 in Cape Town. It was a really well put together show and I would like to thank Keda Gomes and Aveline Kyffin for inviting me to participate. Also, thank you to everyone who came along in support. Below are a couple of pictures from the event.

Intouch Framers, Cape Town

I recently picked up my art from Intouch Framers in Cape Town. This is the second time I have been to them and I am really impressed with the speed and quality of their work. The first time I went to them was about 2 months ago when I needed two of my artworks framed in two days. I knew it was a lot to ask, but they came through with an amazing product.

Then again last week I needed two more frames quite urgently. Even with the busyness of the Cape Town Art Fair for which they were making a number of frames, they were able to squeeze me in and the result was impressive. I would really recommend them to anyone looking to get artworks framed at a reasonable price in Cape Town. Below are some images of my art that was framed by them .

To find out more about Intouch Framers, you can visit them at intouchframers.co.za.

Oil Painting Lesson 3: The Painting Begins

For yesterday's class I began painting my image. At first I was rather overzealous and painted the entire background in one go. However, the colour was too dark so I started over. I was advised to take a slower approach, by observing individual areas and to mix colours for that specific region. It's a slow process, but once you get the right colours it's quite rewarding.

The pictures below show me trying to mix the correct colours. The left image shows colour swatches which I hold up next to the reference image to give me an idea if I am getting the right colour.

Oil Painting Lesson 2: Mixing colours.

This week's painting class at Frank Joubert was rather challenging. It mainly involved mixing primary colours to form a neutral grey.
It takes a lot of backwards and forwardsing of adding a bit of this colour, a bit of that colour, and so on and so forth. I managed to get a grey, but it kept either tending towards a yellow/grey or a blue/grey.
The image I found to paint as my first picture was this one. It's going to be a bit of a challenge but it could look really cool when finished. As  you can see from the second image, I didn't get very far with my underpainting as I spent most of the time struggling with getting a grey.

Oil Painting Classes: Lesson 1

Last week Thursday I began an oil painting class at Frank Joubert art centre in Cape Town. Its an 8 week course taught by Anne Foale. For the first lesson all that was required of me was to spend the entire 2 hours drawing a green pepper, which you can see below.

A pencil sketch of a green pepper.

Below are some of the things I needed to purchase for the course. Some paint brushes, three primary colours and white, and some turpentine. The oil paints are a Winton Phthalo Blue 30, Winton Permanent Rose 49, Lukas Lemon Yellow 210, and Lukas Titanium White 208.

An easel that I bought from the Deckle Edge.        Some Winton and Lukas oil paints.

Some dubious sketchbook art

For the past couple of months or so I have really wanted to improve my female figure drawing. I decided that instead of taking the typical life drawing approach to representing the female form, I would rather fuse some landscape art into the drawings.

The last drawing here was done whilst I was at Club Mykonos near Langebaan.
